Block, Virginia S. "Dinny" Virginia S. Block, age 88, of Watertown died on Saturday December 10, 2016 at Heritage Homes in Watertown. Popularly known as "Dinny", she was born in Chicago, IL, and spent her childhood in Emmetsburg, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA, in 1950 with a major in English. After teaching in South Dakota and Wisconsin, she married Lee Block in 1953 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. They were married for 57 years and had 5 sons: Jim, Jon, Cory, Thomas, and Todd. In later years, she achieved a master's degree in English Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She taught as a substitute teacher in the Watertown Public Schools. The last 17 years of her career were spent as a communications instructor at Madison Area Technical College-Watertown. Dinny was a 60+ year member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, and served as moderator and long-time member of its choir. She was a past President of the Watertown branch of the AAUW. Survivors include brother Hunter (Ruthann) Soper of Corona Del Mar CA, and sons, James (Rene), Minneapolis, Jonathon, Orcas Island, WA, and four grandchildren, Alex, Greta, Erika, and Sarah. She was preceded in death by husband Lee, three sons, Thomas, Todd, and Cory. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown with Pastor Stephen Welsh officiating. Family and friends may call on Saturday from 11 AM until the time of the service. If desired memorials may be directed to the Music Fund of the First Congregational Church.
