WATERTOWN Gary Robert Smith, age 70, passed away on September 10, 2014 in Vigo, Spain while on a trip with his wife, Jan. He was born to Kenneth and Isa (Treichel) Smith on November 4, 1943 in Omaha, NE. He grew up in Coal City, IL, then earned a BS degree in business from the University of Wyoming where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and a MBA from Bradley University. Gary began his career at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, IL. He and his wife subsequently purchased Kusel Equipment Co. in Watertown, WI in 1974. Gary continued to lead the company until his death, carrying on the 165 year legacy of the oldest business in Watertown. Gary married Jan Baker on June 24, 1967. They have 2 sons, Gregory (Jennifer) Smith of Sheboygan Falls, WI and David (Ricky-Marie) Smith of Watertown, WI, and seven grandchildren; Cara, Jacey, Callen, Owen, Colby, Ezra, and Asher Smith. Being a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown was an important part of Gary's life. He served in many capacities, often advising the church in financial matters. Gary enjoyed being a longtime member of the Watertown Country Club. Gary loved being involved in Watertown. He was active in many community organizations, including serving as a member and chair of the Watertown Police and Fire Commission and the Economic Development Organization. Gary was also a member of Rotary since 1975 and served as president, the Rotary Boy Scout representative, and in many other capacities. He was recognized by Rotary with the Paul Harris Award. Gary was an Eagle Scout, active in the Potawatomi Area Council and led his sons to become Eagle and Life members in the Boy Scouts. His favorite pastimes included; being at the lake, cards and games, golf, travel and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed being a grandfather (Papa). He will be missed not only by his family, but also his many friends. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, his sister, Geraldine (Robert) Elfline of Morrison, IL and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A celebration of Gary's life will be held at the First Congregational Church of Christ, Watertown at 120 Kuckkan Lane. There will be a visitation from 4:00pm to 6:30pm on Wednesday, September 17th. The memorial service will take place at 11:00am on Thursday, September 18th and will be preceded by an hour of visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Watertown, the Watertown Public Library or a charity of one's choice.
