Gary Palmer

Gary S. Palmer, 77, of Watertown, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2019, at London Lodge in Cambridge. Gary was born to Leslie and Annette Palmer on Aug. 29, 1941, in Marshall. He graduated in 1959 from his beloved Marshall High School as valedictorian. He started working at Virchow Krause & Co., hired by Sam Krause and Ed Virchow, in 1961. He made partner in 1969, retiring in 2004 after 42 years. Gary was a member of numerous AICPA committees and this year he was honored for his 50 years as a CPA. He earned the degree of Master Mason with the Masonic Fraternity and the Wisconsin Masonic Foundation. He married Rebekah Hesgard on Oct. 2, 1966. Blessed with four children: Elizabeth (husband Ashley Strausser), Gregory, Mathew (Josh) friend Jeanette, Jackson (wife Brittany). A proud University of Wisconsin-Madison alumnus and a member of ATO fraternity, he was a strong supporter of the university and loved to attend Badger football and basketball games. He also enjoyed everything outdoors, from downhill skiing to trout fishing, hiking, listening to the loons at the family cabin on Butternut Lake, family times around the campfire and entertaining everyone, playing the songs of John Denver, on his harmonica. Most of all, he enjoyed a beautiful sunrise, classical music and a riveting game of bridge or cribbage with his dear wife, Becky. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David; and sister-in-law, Darlene Palmer. A visitation will be held on Friday, April 26, at Schmutzler-Vick Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Family and friends may call from 3 p.m. until the time of the service. A service will be held at 4:30 p.m. with the Rev. David Zimmermann officiating, with the last rites by the Masonic Rites Jefferson County, WI, Lodge #9 F&AM taking place at 4:15 p.m. Memories and condolences may be sent at www.watertownwifuneralhome.com.
