Marshall/Waterloo Dorothy "Dot" Freidel, 88, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at So Close to Home assisted living facility in Marshall. She was born on September 24, 1924 in Sun Prairie, WI, the daughter of Adolph and Mary (Pirkl) Zandler. She graduated with the class of 1942 from Sun Prairie High School. On October 30, 1943 she was united in marriage to Jerome (Jerry) Freidel at Sacred Hearts Church in Sun Prairie. They farmed in the Town of York for 69 years; thirty-six as dairy farmers and the remaining years raising beef and crops. Dorothy was a member of St. Mary of the Nativity Catholic Church in Marshall, for many years helping with funeral luncheons and the church festival. Dorothy was a devoted mother and grandmother. Family gatherings, especially Christmas Eve, were eagerly anticipated by her 13 grandchildren. Her poems and treats made each grandchild's birthday a special occasion. She attended school and church activities for her children and grandchildren in Marshall and Sun Prairie. Dot also enjoyed reading, gardening, baking, and playing cards with family and friends. Dot is survived by two daughters, Mary (Dennis) Riley, Kate (Russ) Dahl; a son, Greg (Gayle) Freidel; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Freidel. She is further survived by 12 grandchildren; Andrea (Troy) Johnson, Kate (Chris) Bennett, Jessie Mueller, Beth (Matthew) Pantzlaff, Tara Freidel, Erin (Brad) Graf, Kierstin (Mike) Kohn, Jane Riley, Kelly (Dan) Howard, Megan (Tim) Schultz, Tim (fiancée Lindsey) Dahl, and Lindsay Freidel. "Grandma Dot" was much loved by her 17 great-grandchildren. Dorothy is survived by her sisters-in-law, Margaret Thornsen and Shirley Mork, and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry on December 4, 2012; her son, Tom; grandson, Bryan Freidel; great-granddaughter, Brynn Graf; her brother, Harold Zandler; and her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Garvey and Margaret Carlson. She was further preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Hazel Zandler and Lucille Freidel, and her brothers-in law, Harold Garvey, Harry Carlson, Francis Freidel, Cyril Freidel, and Earl Thornsen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at MARSHALL CAMPUS OF THE HOLY FAMILY PARISH, 120 S. Beebe St., Marshall (formerly St. Mary's). Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Monday, May 27, 2013, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the parish center at the church and on Tuesday after 10 a.m. in the church. There will be a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Hart-Vick Funeral Home of Marshall is serving the family.
