David R. Schumann WATERTOWN - David R. Schumann, age 75, a retired professional forester and wood technologist for the USDA Forest Service and also a retired colonel in the US Army, died September 18, 2012 in Watertown. Mr. Schumann was born in Watertown on July 5, 1937 to Harold L. and Gertrude L (Fleischer) Schumann. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Moore on September 4, 1970 in Madison. Mr. Schumann graduated from the Preparatory Department of Northwestern College, Watertown in 1955 and subsequently earned several degrees: a BS in Forestry in 1959 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, a MS in forestry and forest products in 1960 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and was a 1980 graduate of the US Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Mr. Schumann was a member of a number of honorary and technical societies and in 1997 was elected to Fellow in the Society of American Foresters. He began his professional career with the Forest Service in July, 1955, a career that came to an end when he retired from the Forest Service in August 1992. Mr. Schumann was preceded in death by his father Harold in 1961, his brother John in 1964, his mother Gertrude in 1989, and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) in 2011. He is survived by a son Derek (Michele) of Fort Myers, Florida, a daughter Martha (Tom) of Gila, New Mexico, and a brother Thomas (Althea) of Bonita Springs, Florida. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 215 North 6th Street, Watertown at 11AM on Wednesday September 26, 2012 with Pastor James Werner officiating.. Visitation will be held from 9AM until the time of service on Wednesday at the church.
